COMMENCEMENT 1/5/72 Early grade reports for graduating seniors approved. 4/18/73 FC went on record as favoring the idea that graduating students receive their diplomas at graduation (Law School graduates exempted). 12/4/74 Decided that June 1975 Commencement will be held in Public Hall. August 1975 Commencement to be held on a Sunday on campus to see on a small scale the problems a June commencement on campus will harbor. 12/3/75 Approved concept for holding commencement without approving any specific commencement plans. 12/7/77 Proposal concerning distribution of diplomas referred back to Admissions & Standards Comm. 4/5/78 Discontinuing distribution of diplomas at commencement approved. 2/7/79 Commencement plans approved: recipients of President's Award to be included in platform party; holding summer commencement on Thursday instead of Friday; defeated proposals to curtail musical interlude and eliminate the hooding of Ph.D. candidates at University ceremonies. 12/2/81 Recommended that summer commencement be abolished and that the students who expect to graduate in August be allowed to participate to the fullest extent possible in the commencement ceremonies of the prior June. Admissions & Standards Comm. to address the question of eligibility for participation in the June Commencement. 4/7/82 Commencement Participation Policy approved: Candidates (except Engineering students) who have filed for graduation and who have indicated that they will complete all degree requirements by the end of summer session may participate in the June commencement. 2/14/96 Approved experimental program of holding two back-to-back ceremonies: 10:00 A.M. program for A&S, Urban Affairs and First Colleges; 3:00 P.M. program for Engineering, Business and Education Colleges. Program precipitated by financial, space and time constraints. 1/14/98 Approved recommendations for holding commencement programs. 4/3/02 Approved proposal for holding a commencement program in December. 11/6/02 Approved changing date of Spring 2003 commencement from Sunday, May 11 to Saturday, May 10. 3/10/04 (Report 20) Approved that undergraduate students must be registered for or have completed all remaining courses required to fulfill graduation requirements in order to participate in graduation ceremonies. 3/10/04 (Report 22) Approved requirements for doctoral student participation in graduate ceremonies.
